Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment for Dry Eyes

VisionPoint Eye Center is pleased to offer treatment for patients suffering from chronic dry eye disease and facial Rosacea.  Based on your eye health history, Intense Pulsed Light treatment (IPL) may be an option to relieve your symptoms.

IPL treatment for dry eye utilizes gentle pulses of light to liquefy and release hardened oils that have clogged meibomian glands in the eyelids. IPL also treats vascularization and inflammation of the eyelids, reducing eyelid redness and stimulating healthy gland function.

In addition to effectively treating the underlying causes of chronic dry eye, there are also many cosmetic benefits for the facial skin. IPL photofacial treatments consistently and predictably improve the texture, tone and color of the skin with little to no down time. IPL also stimulates the growth of collagen, decreases pore size and gives skin a youthful appearance.  IPL is the use of intense pulses of non-coherent light distributed over a range of wavelengths; from 500 nm to 1200nm.  If you are interested in learning more about this treatment contact us or call 309.662-7700 extension 8030.

Please note:  Our practice uses IPL for medical purposes (dry eye disease) only.

OptiLIFT

OptiLIFT by Lumenis is a gentle, non-surgical treatment designed to improve both eye comfort and the appearance of the lower eyelids. As we age, the muscles around the eyes can weaken, leading to droopy lids, incomplete blinking, and dry eye symptoms. OptiLIFT uses Dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMSt) to activate and strengthen these muscles, helping improve blinking quality, tear stability, and meibomian gland function. Clinical studies show significant improvements in tear breakup time, blinking efficiency, and lower lid tone – often in just four comfortable, in-office sessions. The result is better eye comfort, healthier tear function, and a refreshed, more lifted appearance with no downtime.

Blephex®

BlephEx® is an in-office treatment designed to gently clean the eyelid margins and remove the buildup of bacteria, debris, and biofilm that contribute to blepharitis and dry eye symptoms. Blepharitis is a common condition that can cause irritation, redness, burning, itching, crusting, watery eyes, and even blurry vision. It is also closely connected to dry eye disease because unhealthy eyelids can affect the quality of your tears.

BlephEx is the first and only in-office eyelid cleaning procedure designed to help maintain clean and healthy eyelids. During treatment, the eyelid margins and lashes are carefully exfoliated to remove buildup and improve overall eyelid hygiene.

Many patients notice relief from symptoms like burning, irritation, redness, and gritty or tired eyes after treatment. Regular eyelid hygiene and periodic BlephEx treatments may help keep symptoms under control and support long-term eye comfort.

Punctal Plugs

Many people suffer from dry eye, when their eyes do not make enough tears or the right quality of tears. Punctal plugs are tiny devices that are placed in the eye’s tear ducts (puncta.)  Puncta are the tiny openings in your eyelids that drain tears from your eyes.  The plug is a little smaller than a grain of rice, and it helps block tears from draining from the eye, keeping the tears on the surface of the eye longer. This helps keep the eye’s surface moist and comfortable, relieving itchy, burning and red eyes.

Temporary/dissolving plugs

These are made of a material (such as collagen) that gradually breaks down and is absorbed by the body. These plugs can last in the eye from a few days to months. Temporary plugs are often used to keep the eye moist after having refractive surgery, such as LASIK. They are also used when you want to try out punctal plugs to see if they help relieve your dry eye.

Semi-permanent plugs

These are made of a longer-lasting medical plastic (such as silicone or acrylic). These plugs are designed to stay in the eyelid for years but can be removed by your eye doctor if needed.

OPTASE®

VisionPoint Eye Center Doctors recommend a three-part treatment to improve eye health in patients with dry eye and other ocular surface disease.

  • The OPTASE® Moist Heat Mask is a reusable mask that can be used to heat the oil glands in the eyelids to help release the eyelids natural oils and spread them across the surface of the eye.  The Moist Heat Mask features HydroBead technology, which absorbs moisture from the air and releases a natural, constant moist heat.  No added water needed.  Microwave the mask for 25 seconds on full power.  Always touch with fingers first to test the temperature before applying to closed eyes.  Use heat mask for 10 minutes and massage eye lids.
  • The OPTASE® Tea Tree Oil Lid Wipes can be used to cleanse the eyelids and remove any stubborn scurf or debris.  Remove the wipe from sachet and wrap over clean finger.  Close eye and wipe gently and thoroughly across the eyelid and lashes several times in a side to side motion.  Use a fresh wipe to repeat the process for the other eye.
  • Lastly, the OPTASE® Dry Eye INTENSE Drops will hydrate the eye.  Put one or two drops into the affected eyes as needed to moisturize and sooth dry, irritated eyes.  Preservative free and ideal for daily use.  After use, shake the bottle downwards in order to remove any residual drop that may be left before replacing the cap.

For your convenience, VisionPoint offers the OPTASE® Dry Eye Kit that includes an OPTASE® Moist Heat Mask, (20) OPTASE® Eye lid Cleansing Wipes for daily eye hygiene, and OPTASE® Dry Eye INTENSE Drops for hydration for $60.
