LASIK What to Expect

Your LASIK Consultation

Your free LASIK consultation is the first step toward clearer vision. During your 45–60 minute visit, you’ll meet with one of our friendly refractive coordinators and, if available, your LASIK surgeon. Your eyes won’t be dilated, so there’s no need for a driver.

We’ll take a few simple measurements, talk through your vision goals, and answer any questions you have. If you’re a good candidate and ready to move forward, the next step is your LASIK evaluation – your journey to sharper, glasses-free vision begins here.

Your LASIK Evaluation

Your LASIK evaluation is a detailed follow-up to your consultation and an important step in preparing for your procedure. During this 1.5–2 hour visit, we’ll take all the precise measurements needed for your LASIK treatment.

Please plan to be out of your contacts for at least two weeks (unless otherwise instructed). This exam includes eye dilation, which can last 24–48 hours, so you’ll need a driver and should avoid driving for the rest of the day.

Our team will carefully evaluate your eyes, and as long as everything is healthy, you’ll be ready to move forward to your LASIK procedure – bringing you one step closer to clear, glasses-free vision.

The Day of Your LASIK Procedure

On the day of your procedure, plan to be in our office for 45 minutes to 1 hour. We’ll review your postoperative drops and instructions before escorting you to our LASIK suite. Numbing drops keep your eyes comfortable throughout the procedure.

When creating the LASIK flap, you may feel slight pressure, but it is not painful and typically lasts less than a minute. After the flap is made, your cornea is gently reshaped. Treatment time is usually less than a minute per eye, depending on your prescription.

Afterward, you’ll return to your exam room for a quick check by your surgeon and receive protective eyewear. We recommend resting your eyes at home for 2–4 hours.

After Your LASIK Procedure

Most patients notice 80–90% of their vision improvement by the next day. You’ll see your physician the day after your procedure to look at your eyes and review your postoperative instructions. Temporary fogginess, redness, or irritation is normal, and vision may fluctuate during the first week.

You’ll use several eye drops to aid healing and keep your eyes lubricated. Avoid pools, lakes, hot tubs, saunas, and eye makeup for the first couple of weeks. Most patients can resume normal daily activities after their next-day visit. We’ll continue to check on your vision several times throughout the first year to ensure everything stays on track.
